Do you want to set up your home theatre or do you experience technical difficulties? Please consult our technical checklist.

  • What is the difference between a live screening and watching on demand?

The Online Live screenings are a timed screening, something similar to an online screening room: everybody is watching at the same time. You have to open the stream at the right moment to join. You cannot rewind or restart the film. There is a chatroom and whenever possible a live, interactive Q&A with the filmmaker.

On demand films may be started at any moment in the 80 hours that they are available. So this could be much later than the date and time you bought your ticket. Please note: if the film lasts longer than the time still available, then you can finish watching but you can not restart after the period has ended. So you cannot refresh your page or re-open the stream if there is a technical issue.

  • Which browser do you recommend for streaming the online movies?

No programme works equally well in all web browsers. The Movies that Matter player works best with Google Chrome. If you prefer not to use Google, we recommend using Firefox or Microsoft Edge as a second option. Movies that Matter films can only be streamed using a web browser – we do not (yet) have a streaming app available (for smartphones or smart TVs). See our technical checklist to learn more about streaming our films.

  • Can I watch the online festival programme from outside the Netherlands?

The online film screenings of Movies that Matter can only be viewed from a Dutch IP address. This has to do with the international rights of the films.

However, you can watch our Shorts that Matter during the whole festival period worldwide!

  • Can an online screening be sold out?

Yes, that is possible: a maximum number of tickets are available for each online screening. For each film, Movies that Matter makes agreements with the distibutors about how the film will be shown during the festival and what the restrictions are. For the same reasons that the online films are not available worldwide, we therefore have a maximum number of views per screening.

  • I bought a ticket for an online screening. How can I watch my film?
    • Log in to your MtM account in the website menu to the right. You must do this with the same e-mail address at which you received the e-ticket. If you don’t have a MtM account yet, you can create one here.
    • Click the ‘Watch now’ button in your account to watch the movie.
  • I bought a ticket for an online screening. When can I start the stream? And can I enter, even when it has already started?

With Online Live screenings you can start the stream 20 minutes before the actual programme begins. You can also open the stream after it has already started, however the film will not restart from the beginning when you do.

On Demand films may be started at any moment in the 80 hours that they are available. So this could be much later than the date and time you bought your ticket. Please note: if the film lasts longer than the time still available, then you can finish watching but you can not restart after the period has ended. So you can not refresh your page or re-open the stream if there is a technical issue.

  • I have purchased an Online Live ticket. Can I also watch the film on demand after the live screening?

It is not possible to watch the film on demand after the live screening with an Online Live ticket. To watch on demand, you have to purchase a separate On Demand ticket.

  • Can I also cast films, watch on an external screen or use a beamer/projector?

This is possible in principle, however it is always a good idea to run through our technical checklist first.

  • How much time do I have to watch an On Demand film?

After purchasing your ticket you can start your On demand films at any moment in the 80 hours that they are available. Please note: if the film lasts longer than the time still available, then you can finish watching but you can not restart after the period has ended. So you can not refresh your page or re-open the stream if there is a technical issue.

  • Why does the film stream lag?

The quality of the online movie depends on your internet quality. If the movie crashes or does not run smoothly, here are a few tips:

    • Turn off the WiFi on all of your other devices.
    • Close all other apps or tabs in your internet browser.
    • Move closer to your internet router for a better connection.
  • Is there a test screening so that I can test my chosen viewing method?

Curious to see if everything is functioning as it should? Whether the way you would like to watch film during MtMF (casting, beaming or a second screen) works well with our systems? What our online viewing environment looks like? Try out this test screening (available as of 9 April).

  • Is there an online help desk? And what are the opening times?
