Sakharov Special: Panel talk with Mania Akbari and Aida Ghajar

The Sakharov Prize 2023 was awarded to Jina Mahsa Amini and the Iranian protest movement ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ – Zan, Zendegi, Azadi! Read more about the Sacharov Special at MtMF.

This year we present a special programme dedicated to the Iranian women’s movement and the Iranian women in exile. We do so by screening the poetical film essay How Dare You Have Such a Rubbish Wish, directed by Mania Akbari.

The screening is followed by a panel talk with the director herself and Iranian journalist Aida Ghajar. Aida was the first journalist to report on Mahsa Amini’s death.

The evening will be hosted and moderated by Lynn Zebeda.

We close the evening with the dance performance Gheresh Midam, an investigation into the dancing female body as a form of resistance. Inspired by a scene from the film Gheysar, in which an Iranian actress dances in front of a predominantly male audience, Roshanak Morrowatian examines these movements and explores the subtle ways in which the body has the power to regain agency in spaces of inequality.
