After the festival has officially opened, comedian and satirist Micha Wertheim will introduce the opening film of the festival in his own unique way: “Just as the man the film is about does not want to be defined as a refugee or a victim, so a work of art also wants to be free.” Wertheim sees that this undeniably socially committed film also wants to warn us against the way in which social commitment can stifle both art and people.
Following the screening of this Oscar-nominated film, we will have a conversation with director Kaouther Ben Hania and lead actor Yahya Mahayni, who won the Horizons Award for best actor at the Venice Film Festival. How did this wonderfully beautiful and perfectly grand film come about? Did Wertheim understand Ben Hania correctly? And what will her next project be, now that the world lies at her feet?
