Sakawa

Ben Asamoah

The story behind the spam mails trying to trick us into paying and giving away information. This, however, is not done by big shady organizations but rather by poor workers trying to make a living.

Toxic wastelands contain a wealth of information stored in hard drives and old computers. ‘Sakawa’ is the Ghanaian term for internet scam, and Anna, a young mother, aspires to master that craft. She doesn’t quite have the talent to do so, contrary to master scammer ‘One Dollar’, who skilfully seduces Western contacts with pictures of pretty ladies and his high pitched voice. Sakawa shows the human face of the people behind the spam, who simply seize an opportunity for an extra income.
