The Tower

Mats Grorud

Touching and beautiful puppet animation about eleven-year-old Palestinian girl Wardi, who has been living in a refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon, together with her family ever since she was born. When her beloved granddad apparently loses hope of ever returning to his home in Galilee, she tries to restore hope in the camp.

Wardi’s granddad was expelled from his house in Galilee back in 1948, when Israeli settlers occupied the area. He ended up in the refugee camp in Beirut, where he has been living ever since. His children and grandchildren were born there, but he always hoped of returning home one day. This hope seems lost when he hands his granddaughter the keys to his former home. She then sets out to restore hope in the camp and to find out more about their tragic past through conversations with family members.

Filmmaker Mats Grorud based his film on interviews that he conducted with Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
