Lucía Puenzo’s debut feature film about Alex, a teenagerborn in an intersexual body, who becomes the centre ofpersonal sexual politics while growing fond of a doctor’s son.Alex is a 15-year-old teenager with a secret. Alex isintersexual; she carries both male and female features. Tiredof the lack of understanding they meet, Alex’ parents decideto leave Buenos Aires to make a home out of an isolatedwooden house tucked away in the dunes of the Uruguayanshoreline. A couple of friends come visit them with theirsixteen year old son, Álvaro. Álvaro’s father is a plasticsurgeon and has a medical interest for Alex. The inevitableattraction between the teenagers forces both families to facetheir worst fears. Rumours are spreading around town. Alexgets stared at as if she were a freak. People’s fascination withher becomes dangerous.With strong artistic power this film opens and explains theworld of youth and growing up with tenderness and infullness of a new poetic realism. It is an essay on sexuality,universally present and universally invisible in all societies.Intersexuality or sex ambiguity and the dilemmas that sexualidentity bring along are shown in a subtle, intimate humanportrait.
