Invitation – Sakharov Special

Movies that Matter would like to invite you to this year’s Sakharov Special Event at our Festival in The Hague

This annual event is part of our collaboration with the European Parliament, Liaison Office in the Netherlands to honour the winners of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. In 2022, the prize was awarded by the European Parliament to the brave people of Ukraine.

On Thursday, March 30, we will screen the Ukrainian documentary Plai, a Mountain Path (Ukrainian spoken, English subtitled) in Theater aan het Spui, Zaal 1.

Ukrainian top talent, Sofiia Dorosh from the Davidsbündler Music Academy, will open the event with a beautiful piano play. Host of the evening is correspondent Kysia Hekster. After the film screening there will be a panel talk and Q&A. The panellists will be announced on our website soon. Please note that Roberta Metsola unfortunately will not be able to attend anymore. Dancers of the United Ukrainian Ballet will close the event with a traditional dance

Film: Plai, a Mountain Path

Plai, a Mountain Path directed by Eva Dzhyshyashvili is a meditative portrait of the life of Ukrainian Hannusia and Dmytro and their two grandchildren in a remote mountain village. Dmytro lost his leg defending Ukraine’s independence. Still, the couple stay loving, grateful, and resilient. It’s only gradually that we learn of their hardships and misfortunes, mostly thanks to the children’s inquisitive minds. Like when Vasylko asks: ‘What is the European Union?’ Or Anya, musing to the camera: ‘Why did God create war?’ At moments like these, the echoes of the Russian-Ukrainian war enter this beautiful, poetic gem.
