Invitation – Sakharov Specials

Movies that Matter would like to invite you to this year’s Sakharov Special Event.

This special event is part of our collaboration with the European Parliament to honour the winner of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, Alexei Navalny

On Monday, April 11, we will screen two eye-opening documentaries in Pathé Buitenhof The Hague. Both screenings are followed by an extended panel discussions with the directors and special guests. The Sakharov Specials will be moderated by travel journalist and Russian expert, Jelle Brandt Corstius.

Navalny

Navalny, directed by Daniel Roher, shows how, after the failed attempt on his life, the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny sets out to find the perpetrators. It places him even firmer against the highest levels of Russian state power. Meanwhile, he is preparing for his dangerous return to Russia from exile.

During the extended discussion, the human rights issues in Russia, the current situation of Navalny, and the filmmaking process are discussed by Daniel Roher and a main character, who’s close to Navalny.

F@ck This Job

F@ck this Job, directed by Vera Krichevskaya, shows the then turbulent years behind the scenes at Russian TV channel Dozhd, following its flamboyant founder, Natasha Sindeeva. What starts as a lifestyle channel ‘for normal people’, becomes one of Russia’s few independent news broadcasters. And also, one of Vladimir Putin’s loudest rivals – with all the dangers involved.

After the screening, Jelle Brandt Corstius will speak to Vera Krichevskaya and Helga Salemon, experienced researcher and expert on Russia and the post-Soviet states. We still await if Natasha Sindeeva will be able to join us.
