Invitation Camera Justitia Day

Dear reader,

The Movies that Matter Festival is a film festival on human rights and social justice in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice. Founded in 1995, the festival presents around 90 documentaries and fiction films anually, as well as various side programmes, talk shows and debates. The upcoming Movies that Matter Festival will take place from the 22nd until the 30th of March 2024.

The special programme Camera Justitia puts a spotlight on the relationship between global justice, international law and film. Together with the Asser Institute and VU Amsterdam, Movies that Matter presents the Camera Justitia Day on Thursday 28 March 2024 consisting of three parts: the Global Justice Cinema Seminar, the Masterclass and the Camera Justitia Night.

Global Justice Cinema Seminar

Documentary film is a very powerful medium in the field of global justice. It can document human rights violations, prove war crimes in court, or communicate a strong call for solidarity and action. But documentary filmmaking is never just a ‘neutral’ registration of reality. In two sessions, Professor Wouter Werner and Dr. Sofia Stolk (VU Amsterdam) invite you to explore the connection between justice, documentary film, truth and evidence with a focus on the films in the Camera Justitia competition. The seminar equips you to critically watch, assess, and discuss what these films communicate and how this is achieved.

Camera Justitia Night

The Camera Justitia Night focuses on the many aspects and forms of justice. We will be screening the monumental documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, directed by Johan Grimonprez.

Jazz, decolonization and human rights activism are intertwined in this historical rollercoaster that rewrites the Cold War episode where musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach stormed the UN Security Council to protest against the murder of Patrice Lumumba.

Johan Grimonprez (1962, Belgium) is a renowned filmmaker, multimedia artist and curator. Grimonprez’s critically acclaimed work dances on the borders of practice and theory, art and cinema, documentary and fiction, demanding a double take on the part of the viewer. Informed by an archeology of present-day media, his work seeks out the tension between the intimate and the bigger picture of globalization.

Poet and spoken word artist Sydney Lowell will open the night by giving a performance with rhythmic poetry. The evening is hosted by Maral Khajeh, who will sit down with the director of the film, Johan Grimonprez, for an inspiring conversation about the film.

DJ Mo Wrights will play a jazz inspired set in the foyer of Theater aan het Spui before and after the programme.
