About the film

The documentary follows brothers Saud and Nadeem, who began caring for injured birds of prey twenty years ago after discovering that the local animal hospital only treated vegetarian birds. Their home is shared with dozens of raptors and owls, most of them black kites, which populate the city in large numbers. Among Indian Muslims, it is believed that these birds consume misfortunes. New Delhi, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, is also perhaps one of the most polluted. Yet, it is astonishingly full of life. In stunningly filmed scenes, animals appear in the most unexpected places, as if they had always lived there.

The brothers speak about how life experiments and adapts to changing conditions. For example, the birds sing louder to rise above the noise of the city, and they’ve even discovered how to use cigarette butts as a defense against parasites. All That Breathes, by Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen, is a fascinating and layered documentary about two brothers rescuing birds of prey in New Delhi, where both animals and people visibly struggle with the consequences of pollution. The two Muslim brothers, with great wisdom and humor, show how all life, from fungi to humans, is interconnected. The city as a living organism may be a cliché, but this film demonstrates how true it is.
