Olivia (Sophie Lindner) and her mother (Thekla Reuten) have an unruly bond: intense, unpredictable, but inseparable. After an intense confrontation, Olivia is placed out of home and ends up in an emergency shelter. There she encounters other young people who, like her, carry their wounds with them, and gradually this new living situation tilts her perspective. Every time she goes home, she sees how her mother is not an average parent, but a capricious, destructive influence – a friend you’d rather not have. Olivia faces an impossible choice: let herself be swallowed up or finally break free.
Vlam (Flame) is Daphne Lucker’s energetic debut feature, written by Rosita Wolkers, about friendship, complex family ties and daring to let go.
