Orange the World | Kismet at Theater de Vaillant

On 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Theater de Vaillant will be coloured orange in honour of Orange the World. Together with partners from the Schilderswijk and Transvaal neighbourhoods, they have organised a mini festival where we will open up dialogue, engage in conversation, and above all reflect on the power of women. Kismet

Why are Turkish soap operas so popular with women – not only in Turkey, but also in the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans and Asia? Millions of viewers don’t want to miss a single episode of series such as Noor, Fatmagul, Suleiman and Life Goes On. Film locations in Turkish cities have become tourist attractions and children are being named after admired main characters en masse.

Kismet seeks answers from the creators, sociologists and loyal fans around the world. Interviews with star actors, directors and screenwriters are interspersed with analyses by sociologists and portraits of loyal, mostly female, fans. For these enthusiasts, the soaps, which transcend culture and religion, mean much more than a temporary escape from the often gloomy social reality. Not only do they swoon over the widely publicised romantic intrigues, but they also draw inspiration from the female main characters, who are all real fighters, strong and independent. The documentary shows a number of women who, following in the footsteps of their heroines, fight for their rights and finally break free from an oppressive life.
