Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk bij Theater de Vaillant
On Thursday 22 January, we will be screening the documentary Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk in collaboration with Theater de Vaillant.
When Iranian film director Sepideh Farsi tries to travel to the Gaza Strip in April 2024, she is denied entry. Her plan to document life under Israeli siege comes to a standstill, until she comes into contact with Fatma “Fatem” Hassona, a young, talented photojournalist from Gaza City, and Fatma becomes her eyes in the devastated area.
Through video calls, the two women discuss the young photographer’s life: her remarkable vitality, her hopes, her fears and tears. From Fatma’s home, a rare human perspective on an inhuman existence unfolds as she simultaneously reports on the bombings and destruction. The women stay in touch for more than 200 days, until Fatma and her family are also killed in an Israeli air strike – one day after the film’s selection for Cannes was announced.
Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk is an urgent and poignant portrait of a young woman who laughs, mourns, loves and continues to dream in the midst of war. Sepideh Farsi’s documentary combines raw immediacy with intimate conversations by showing daily life during the genocide, captured through video calls and Fatma’s impressive photo reports.
The murder of Fatma and her family on 16 April 2025 has forever changed the meaning of the film; her voice and images now form a powerful tribute to all lives under fire; a tribute that, after its premiere in Cannes, resonates far beyond the world of cinema.
