On 13 & 14 December, Filmhuis Den Haag is, even more than usual, the cinephile heart of the city. On that day, the seventh edition of the ROOTS Film Festival will be organised: a gift from the Filmhuis to The Hague and its residents. Everyone is welcome to attend this free film festival where filmmakers from The Hague take center stage, meet each other, and engage with the audience.
The festival, an initiative of Filmhuis Den Haag, gives residents the chance to discover the creativity of filmmakers from The Hague and promotes connections between makers. In this way, ROOTS Film Festival contributes to a lively film climate and encourages encounters between audiences and makers in the city.
On Saturday 14 December, visitors can see a total of 28 films, divided into ten different thematic blocks. Each film block will be screened twice, with one screening followed by a Q&A session with the makers, moderated by staff of Filmhuis Den Haag. After each screening, the audience can vote for the audience award. The ROOTS Film Festival will conclude on Saturday evening with the presentation of the audience award and the jury prize during the closing ceremony. Afterwards, there will be a festive closing ceremony with a DJ, where both the audience and the makers can round off the festival together.
In the run-up to ROOTS Film Festival 2024, Filmhuis Den Haag invited Movies that Matter to select two films in line with their festival’s mission, films that inspire dialogue on pressing global issues. The result is a pair of thought-provoking works that reflect the challenges and contradictions of contemporary society: The Elephant & The Room (Anas Qadamani) and In the Trace of Tilled Stones (Nesie Junyi Wang).
