Daughters

Jenifer Malmqvist

Maja, Hedvig and Sofia have to come to terms with the suicide of their mother Carolina. All three have struggled in their own way. Now, approaching adulthood, they come together to try and make sense of what happened. Very intimate documentary, dealing with a difficult subject in an open, vulnerable way.

‘I think she’s taking a break from being human for a while,’ said Hedvig back then. She and her sisters Sofia and Maja grew up together in the Swedish countryside with their mother Carolina – a radiant personality and a devoted mother. But on Hedvig’s 10th birthday, Carolina took her own life. Maja, the eldest, was the one who found her. She was 16 years old at the time. Sofia was 8.

Daughters follows them, both not long after it happened and a few years later, when they are approaching adulthood. We meet three level-headed, seemingly happy young women. But underneath they struggle. With their recollections of Carolina and the event of her suicide. With the fact that people don’t talk about it. And with their own feelings of guilt and anger. Carefully they find ways to deal with their experience. In the meantime they give us, the viewer, a chance to reflect on a subject that is becoming less and less taboo.
