The Dissident

Bryan Fogel

Thriller-like documentary investigating the career and ultimate murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, directed by Academy Award winner Bryan Fogel (Icarus). With unseen surveillance footage and other newly unearthed evidence. Featuring Khashoggi’s fiancé Hatice Cengiz, fellow-dissidents, and Turkish police officers and prosecutors who worked on the case.

On 2 October 2018, exiled Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents he needed for his marriage to Hatice Cengiz. Inside, he was brutally murdered by Saudi agents. The Saudi authorities claimed Khashoggi was killed in a ‘rogue operation’. But much evidence points toward a more sinister plot, involving Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.

This massively documented account of the murder and its aftermath leaves no stone unturned. With a treasure trove of new evidence and previously unseen footage, director Bryan Fogel delivers a gripping account of a killing that shocked the world. With impressive appearances by Khashoggi’s friend and fellow-dissident Omar Abdulaziz, and his brave and committed fiancé Hatice Cengiz.
