Our Colonial History

On Saturday 29 March, our new programme Our Colonial Past takes place, featuring films that shine a light on this subject. With several guests and moderator Maurice Seleky. Visit the films together for only €22.

Tussen wal en schip

A journey through history, a confrontation with silence. In Tussen wal en schip, three grandchildren—Jip, Kyron, and Benjamin—take their Dutch-Indonesian grandparents to the place where they first arrived in the Netherlands, hoping to break through a past long shrouded in silence. Through intimate yet structured conversations, they attempt to bridge generations and come to terms with an identity shaped by forced migration, colonial legacies, and unspoken trauma. The screening will be followed by a Q&A co-director Juliette Dominicus, Kyron and Stieve van Wichelen, creator of the Instagram account Nederlands-Indië.

Bloedlijnen

How do you come to terms with a gruesome family history? For generations, both the descendants of enslaved people and the descendants of those who profited from slavery have kept this question buried. But in Bloodlines, the silence is finally broken. Through deeply personal narratives, six families explore how the legacy of slavery remains visible today – in archives, in family histories, and in the inequalities that persist.
