Along the Way: Meet the Makers

In this masterclass we talk with the makers of Along the Way: renowned director Mijke de Jong, screenwriters Jolein Laarman and Jan Eilander, producer Frank Hoeve and co-writers and cast members Malihe Rezaie, Nahid Rezaie and Sina Nazari. Along the Way has been selected for the Dutch Movies Matter competition. We pay special attention to the importance of storytelling and cooperation. How do the screenwriter, the research team and the director work together to build and tell a story collectively?

Mijke de Jong 
Mijke de Jong directs television drama, features, short films, documentaries, and plays. Her films have won numerous awards, among them a Crystal Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival for Bluebird (2004). Layla M. (2016) had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Katia's Sister (2008) won the Youth Jury Prize at Locarno. Her films have also won several Golden Calfs: for the five actresses in Broos (1997), Best Film for Joy (2010), and Best Direction for Tussenstand (2007). In 2021 she was awarded the Golden Calf for Film culture for her oeuvre. Her twelfth feature film, Along the Way (2022), is based on the story of the twin sisters Nahid and Malihe from Afghanistan, whom she met during her volunteer work in Camp Moria on Lesbos. 

Jolein Laarman
Before finding her true passion as a scriptwriter, Jolein worked as a production designer. Since then, she wrote and co-wrote many scripts for film and television, winning (inter)national awards (including Best Script at Cannes L’Atelier). The films she worked on were selected by international film festivals and won numerous awards. She also works as a script coach at the Netherlands Film Academy, at international script labs and workshops and as a script consultant on (inter)national productions. Selection of productions she worked on: Ik ben Willem, Tussenstand, Broos, Brozer, Katia’s Sister, Among Us, Symbiose, Geloven, Yulia and Juliet, Fifty-Fifty, Kauwboy, Disappearance.

Jan Eilander
Jan Eilander is (scenario)schrijver, muzikant en filmen tv-maker. Hij regisseerde diverse documentaires
en televisieprogramma’s, waaronder het meermalen onderscheiden Rock & Roll Junkie. Hij schrijft scenario’s
voor film & tv. De films die hij met en/of voor regisseuse Mijke de Jong schreef, zijn nationaal en internationaal onderscheiden. Zoals In Krakende Welstand (prijs Beste debuut van de stad Utrecht), Hartverscheurend (Juryprijs Locarno), de 23delige kinderserie Ik Ben Willem (i.s.m. Jolein Laarman; winnaar Gouden Kinderkast). Voor het script van de speelfilm Het Zusje Van Katia ontving hij samen met Jolein Laarman een Gouden Kalf. Layla M is de laatste en tevens meest gelauwerde film die hij schreef voor Mijke de Jong.
Andere recente films die hij schreef zijn J. Kessels the movie van Erik de Bruyn en Een Echte Vermeer van regisseur Rudolf van de Berg. Medio 2019 is hij mede-eigenaar van Dokter Script, een laboratorium voor
schrijvers. Op dit moment schrijft hij in samenwerking met Daniel Samkalden de scenario
bewerking van Joe Speedboot van Tommy Wieringa.

Frank Hoeve
Frank Hoeve is één van de oprichters van BALDR FILM. In 2012 is het in Amsterdam gevestigde productiebedrijf van Frank Hoeve en Katja Draaijer tot leven gekomen. Ze richten zich op het ontwikkelen en (co)produceren van uitdagende, auteur gedreven films van een select aantal filmmakers met een onderscheidende, persoonlijke signatuur. BALDR Film biedt veel steun op het gebied van inhoud, waarbij zij zich niet alleen focussen op urgente content, maar ook op vorm en originaliteit. Hierbij zijn ze niet bang om risico’s te nemen, altijd gericht op een hoge artistieke waarde, visueel intrigerende stijl en een internationaal publiek.

About Along the Way
While walking with a group of refugees in the border region between Iran and Turkey, Fatima and Zahra get separated from their mother and sisters. They end up in Istanbul, where they link up with 16-year-old Rahim, a cocky boy with ‘connections’: he helps human traffickers. Because their work in an illegal sweatshop doesn’t pay enough to make the journey to the Netherlands, Fatima and Zahra start working for Rahim. This brings them into very dangerous and shady territory.

The story is largely based on the experiences of sisters Malihe and Nahid Rezaie, whom director Mijke de Jong met while giving film workshops in refugee camp Moria. They play Fatima and Zahra with a beautiful spirit and lust for life. Interspersed with interviews by the sisters with female inhabitants of Moria, who tell of their experiences, hardships and hopes.
