City of Borders
Yun Jong Suh
The Shushan gay bar in the heart of Jerusalem is an unusual symbol of unity. 'City of Borders' shows what goes on inside this refuge. Shusan turns out to be a meeting place for people from different nationalities and different religions. People that would normally be considered as ‘enemies’ here form a close-knit group that shares a common goal: obtain the right to be accepted for who they are. The story of five ‘habituals’ portrayed in the documentary illustrates that this is not easy. "Everyone here comes from his own ghetto", says the owner of the bar, 36-year-old Sa'ar Netanel, who was the first avowed gay to sit on the Jerusalem city council. Sa'ar is rather clear-cut, a trait that besides the admiration of the gay community in Jerusalem has also earned him a few death threats.
