A Thousand Girls Like Me

Sahra Mani

A Thousand Girls Like Me tells the moving story of the courageous Khatera Golzad. Khatera is a 23-year-old Afghan woman who is a victim of sexual abuse by her father. She tells her story on national television, seeking justice for herself and all other girls like her.

As a child, Khatera was abused by her father. More than thirteen years later, despite several aborted pregnancies, she gives birth to her daughter. Despite her cries for help and many attempts to file charges, neither the Afghan police nor the legal system helped her.

When she gets pregnant with her second child, she appears on national television to publicly accuse her father. Khatera is threatened by male relatives and judges, but eventually succeeds bringing her case to court. Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani tells the story wherein love, hope strength and resilience are central, in a country where systematic abuse of women is rarely discussed.
