An overwhelming historical drama that covers thirty years in the life of a grand artist. The film asks the question whether a society can be judged by the art it produces and explores the dynamics between art and political morality.
Kurt grew up in Germany during the Second World War. When he runs into Elisabeth at the Faculty of Arts, the two instantly fall in love. Elisabeth’s father, professor Seeband, is not overly impressed by Kurt and thinks his daughter would be better off without him. Both men are connected by events from the past, and the dubious role that Seeband played during the Second World War casts a shadow over his existence. When Kurt finds out what he stands for and what true art stands for, this also has consequences for his relation to Seeband.
