Extraordinary tale about the life of Martin Goldsmith’s Jewish parents, who fled Nazi Germany. The conversations Martin had with his father are reenacted, with Bruno Ganz sublimely performing the role of the father. The story of the young lovers is vividly brought to life by the ingeniously edited archive material.
Martin’s father Georg is about to leave Germany when he receives an invitation to play in an orchestra. There he falls in love with a girl, who is later to become his wife, and decides to postpone his departure. Meanwhile, numerous laws are passed that ban Jews from public life, and anti-Semitism takes hold in German society.
Winter Journey offers a unique and personal view of Jewish life in Nazi Germany. In spite of the world around them becoming increasingly unsafe, the young couple still dares to go out, make music and enjoy life. Because as Georg says: ‘Sometimes you have to take a risk to get what you love.’
