ESTAFET Edition #3: Redefining the Filmmaker
For the third edition of ESTAFET, wysiwyg continues the conversation with ‘Redefining the filmmaker’. Many makers and artists work outside the traditional frameworks of making, distributing and presenting film. It is therefore time to rethink what we mean by a ‘filmmaker’. What if we broaden that definition? And how can we make sure that, in a city so closely connected to film, there is also space for these different ways of working?
The programme consists of a keynote, panel talk, screening and roundtable sessions. Throughout the afternoon, there will be plenty of space for inspiring ideas, thought-provoking questions and conversations with a range of makers and film professionals. This edition is curated by wysiwyg.

For all makers, artists, autodidacts, amateurs, professionals, programmers, curators, policymakers and anyone who feels connected to artist film.

Programme
Inspirational session
We start with a presentation by online film magazine Talking Shorts on how they create a platform for short films and moving image, building a community through writing, events and talks.
Next, Brussels-based film collective elephy joins for a panel talk. As a platform for the production and distribution of film and media art, they will share their perspective on the topic. Together, Talking Shorts and elephy will explore who these different ‘filmmakers’ are, what they need to make their work, and how these different film practices can be supported.
After the panel talk, we will screen The Demand of Ordinary Devotion (2022) by Eva Giolo. The film was selected by elephy and invites us to reflect on the process of filmmaking.
Roundtable sessions
Across two rounds, choose a theme that resonates with you and join the conversation. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and offers space to ask questions, share experiences and contribute your own perspective. The conversations will be guided by moderators who are active in the field of artist film.
The five themes are:
- Collaboration and self-production
How can collaborative and self-production models reshape the ways artists develop, produce and sustain moving-image work? And how can they challenge traditional hierarchies within filmmaking? - Reflection and development
How do we create space and new ways of discussing work that is not yet finished? - Space and place
What physical and digital infrastructures do makers need to develop and present their work? - Programming and (festival) distribution
What space is there for artist moving-image work within festivals and platforms? And how can this work be better programmed and distributed? - Position and vision
What do process-driven filmmaking practices need? And how can we better understand and respond to these needs?
