Now in Cinemas: Soldier’s Bones
In 1971, young Newsweek reporter Alec Shimkin uncovers a secret U.S. military operation in the Mekong Delta: Operation Speedy Express, during which large-scale war crimes are committed. Following the My Lai massacre in 1968, he becomes convinced that this “Super My Lai” must also be brought to light.
For months, Newsweek suppresses his investigation—under pressure from the government and due to self-censorship within the editorial staff. What should have been a groundbreaking cover story is ultimately published as a small, watered-down article with little visible impact. The Vietnamese eyewitness testimonies Alec had painstakingly collected disappear from view.
Shortly afterward, Alec goes missing in Vietnam. Soldier’s Bones reconstructs his attempt to expose Operation Speedy Express—the story he never had the chance to finish himself. What disappeared along with him? And what does his silence reveal about the ways stories are shaped, filtered, or suppressed, and about who decides what becomes visible and what remains hidden?
The film was previously screened at the Movies that Matter Festival 2026.
