Stonewall x Movies that Matter

Rights aren’t given, they’re taken! On Sunday 8 November, we’re joining forces with Stonewall Festival to explore the history of queer resistance. At GR8, we’ll screen two films about communities that fought for their own space when no one else would make room for them. In a world where queer rights are once again under attack, these stories are more urgent than ever.

Paris is Burning

Paris is Burning (Jennie Livingston, 1990) is the iconic film about New York’s ballroom scene in the 1980s. Black and Latinx queer and trans people built their own families, houses and stages. Voguing, shade and reading originated here, long before the mainstream adopted them. The film is a love letter to a community that survived in a world that excluded it, and a reminder of those who laid the foundations.

Rebel Dykes

A razor-sharp documentary about London’s post-punk scene in the 1980s, capturing the explosive energy that emerged when punk and feminism collided. REBEL DYKES (Harri Shanahan, Sîan Williams) follows a close-knit group of friends who met at the Greenham Common peace camp and went on to become artists, performers, musicians and activists in London. A heady mix of animation, archival footage and interviews tells the story of a radical scene: squats, BDSM clubs, demonstrations against Thatcher, protests demanding action on AIDS, and the close bonds of chosen families.
