Enkeltje Vrijheid

2024, 44 minutes

When war breaks out in Sudan, 25-year-old Ahmed sees his world collapse and loses his family amid horrific violence. There is only one thing to do: he must flee. He decides to set off on foot to the Netherlands, hoping to live in freedom there.

The documentary Enkeltje Vrijheid (One Way Ticket to Freedom) follows Ahmed during the last leg of his journey: from the Italian Alps to Ter Apel. With an injured foot, no money and no language skills, he tries to cross the border unnoticed, while being confronted with the harsh reality of European migration policy.

Along the way, Ahmed passes through luxurious holiday landscapes that contrast starkly with his exhausting journey. Upon arriving in the Netherlands, he dreams of a new beginning as a journalist, but what awaits him is a country that may offer him safety but not a warm welcome.
