Blauwe ballen en andere verkrachtingsmythes
Sunny Bergman
In a personally driven film essay, Sunny Bergman explores why sexual violence is a problem of epidemic proportions and how we can break it. With a mirrorhouse as a safe space where people can tell their stories, Bergman also explores her own experiences. World premiere.
Why do nearly a quarter of all women experience sexual violence in their lifetime? And if so many women experience sexual violence, who are the perpetrators? Acclaimed director Sunny Bergman (Over the Hill/Beperkt Houdbaar, 2007 and The Colour White / Wit is ook een kleur, 2016) travels through the Netherlands with a mirrorhouse and invites women to share their experiences with sexual violence and she also confronts men by asking have they ever raped a women?
The film also looks at the way the police and the judicial system deals with sexual violence. Why are so few perpetrators of rape ever convicted? And how do victims experience this process?
Bergman also goes back to her own youth and a vacation in Greece, to ask herself the question: when can you call behaviour sexually transgressive? By presenting these personal and often gripping stories, Blue balls and other rape myths holds up a mirror: why do we as a society let it get this far?
