Fly So Far

Activist Grand Jury Documentary Students’ Choice Dutch premiere

Inspiring portrait of Teodora del Carmen Vásquez from El Salvador. After her baby was born dead, she was convicted to thirty years imprisonment for aggravated homicide. In prison she finds out that she is not the only one. Together, the women decide to take a stand.

‘When a woman [in El Salvador] becomes pregnant, she loses all her rights’, a female doctor says halfway through Fly So Far. ‘She automatically becomes an incubator.’ El Salvador has extremely strict abortion laws, and women who lose their baby under unclear circumstances, have a very hard time convincing the police they did nothing wrong. Teodora del Carmen Vásquez lost her baby when she was nine months pregnant. Her baby was stillborn, but the police accused her, without proof, of having drowned her.

In prison, Teodora teams up with other women who have had the same experience. And when human rights organizations like Amnesty International start focusing attention on the case, their chances start to turn. Powerful documentary about a woman who wouldn’t give up, interspersed with beautiful animations.
