Manas

Marianna Brennand

Grand Jury Fiction Dutch premiere

Deep in the Amazon, 13-year-old Tielle grows up with dreams fueled by the departure of her older sister. To her, this escape symbolizes a chance at a better life. But as she grows older, her idealism begins to waver, and she discovers the harsh reality of her surroundings. A raw yet powerful story about a young woman who refuses to let her life be dictated by a system of oppression.

The women in her community face oppression and abuse, a cycle that has persisted for generations. As Tielle becomes aware of these injustices, her determination to change her fate—and that of her younger sister—grows stronger. But to truly break free, she must go beyond dreams alone. Sometimes, emancipation is only possible when women uplift each other—and when necessary, take matters into their own hands in the most drastic way.

Manas is a moving and visually stunning film about resilience and resistance. Director Marianna Brennand turns her camera toward the invisible structures that shape Tielle’s life and those of the women around her. With a poetic yet unflinching gaze, the film presents a deeply human story about hope, courage, and the strength to break free from destructive traditions.
