We Are All Equal

Catrien Ariëns

Slavery has been abolished in Curaçao for almost 160 years, but the legacy and pain still affects descendants of the enslaved to this day. Led by an inspiring Caribbean woman, Judith Harris, people on Curaçao are helping each other to break the vicious circles of the past. They work on self-confidence and the still-hidden inner strength, with spirituality in a connecting role.

From the group, this documentary follows three women in their personal environment and shows how they get a better grip on their own lives and take their surroundings with them. The desire is very strong, but how do you do that, realise your dreams? At the same time, a similar development is taking place in another community far from the city, under the leadership of Naideline Vrutaal, with the motto: 'Nos tur ta igual (We are all equal)'.

This film has been part of the Special: Commemorative Year of the Slavery Past at the Movies that Matter Festival 2023.
