Zie, zo
Kris van Melle
In Zie, Zo we follow the tough 14-year-old Juul, who, wearing an oversized T-shirt, braves her mother’s glamorous photo exhibition. Immediately Juul is confronted with a feminine photographic portrait of herself: of all the photos, this one…?!
Juul’s mother Pina (45) is actually trying to capture her daughter’s beauty and hopes the photo will help her hold on to her. Juul is overwhelmed by guests showering her with compliments that, to her, feel only like rejection. She struggles with her mother’s expectations, her changing body, and her jealousy and curiosity about the world of boys – boys like her brother Adam (16).
The film portrays a complicated mother–child relationship in a time when seeing and being seen play an increasingly important role.
