Our Colonial Past
With two films followed by a discussion and a unique VR installation, we delve deeper into the Dutch colonial past.
Nusa Ina by Anne Jan Sijbrandij tells the moving story of Loey Tamaëla, son of a Moluccan KNIL serviceman. In 1951, the first Moluccans arrived in the Netherlands, expecting to return home within months. Loey himself came in 1962 as a child, but like many others, his return never happened. His story of uprooting and longing for his mother island reflects 75 years of Moluccan presence in the Netherlands.
A Feathered Memory by Ida Does follows Brazilian Indigenous artist Daiara Tukano as she creates a mural in the Mauritshuis and explores, through art, the colonial ties between the Netherlands and Brazil.
The two films are followed by in-depth conversations with the filmmakers and guests from the films. Moderation by Yomi Hitijahubessy.
Revival Roadshow is a virtual reality experience critiquing colonial legacies through the speculative resurrection of 17th-century explorer Abel Tasman. Viewers navigate intertwining narratives across richly detailed 360° scenes, guided by eye-tracking audio. For this experience you need to book a time-slot in advance.
