An inspiring, heartening and true story about the close friendship between a bouncer (Viggo Mortensen) and a concert pianist (Mahershala Ali). They have to set their differences aside to make their journey through the segregated United States the most memorable event of their lives.
When in 1962 pianist Don Shirley needs a bodyguard to go on a tour through the southern states, he gets in touch with Tony Lip, an Italian-American bouncer who is keen to earn some extra money. Together they set out on a journey through several ‘white’ states using a special travel guide (The Green Book) that contains details of hospitable and safe places for Afro-Americans. Along the way, they are confronted with their clashing characters, dangerous situations and racism, but also with unexpected humanness and a good deal of humor. They have to put their differences aside in order to get home safely and, in doing so, develop a special friendship.
