In Your Arms

Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm

Niels, who is terminally ill, has one last wish before dying: a one-way trip to Switzerland. Maria, nurse in search of self-confidence, decides to help him. Together they go on a road trip that takes them from Denmark through Hamburg to Switzerland. On the road, they get closer to one another and to realizing their dreams along the way.

Maria is an isolated young woman who works as a nurse in a nursing home. There she takes care of patient Niels, an embittered man in his late thirties whose terminal illness has left him virtually paralysed. Niels is tired of living and has trouble coping with his miserable fate.

Maria feels it is her duty to help him when he wants to go to Switzerland to end his life in a clinic. Niels needs medical attention and cannot travel alone, and both his mother and brother feel little urge to join him. This makes Maria the appropriate person to assist. They set out together but it soon turns out that Maria faces a burdensome task. Her helpless patient can be completely obnoxious, making no effort to conceal the fact that he finds his nurse rather dopey. Yet mutual understanding grows and a special friendship develops between them as the journey proceeds.

Debut movie by Denmark-based French director Samanou Acheche Sahlstorm, who won the Audience Award at the 2015 Film by the Sea festival and received the FIPRESCI Prize. Sahlstorm worked with director Lars von Trier for several years.
