Photographer, communicator and storyteller Platon has gained worldwide fame with his portraits. Platon has worked with a range of international publications including Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Esquire, and won a Peabody Award for his photo essays for The New Yorker. He has photographed over 30 covers for TIME Magazine and is a World Press Photo laureate. He is currently on the board for Arts and Culture at the World Economic Forum. In 2013, Platon founded The People’s Portfolio, a non-profit foundation dedicated to celebrating emerging leaders of human rights and civil rights around the world.
Portrait of Stranger is a series of interviews with refugees from around the world which serves as a collective portrait of human fragility and fortitude. Creating a visual vocabulary through photography and film, Portrait of Stranger explores the universal truths of the human spirit – the desire to be free, to be safe, to be respected, to belong. When we distill the dialogue beyond facts, figures, and borders, can we see ourselves in the story?
Portrait of Stranger was a collaboration between artist Platon and the United Nations Refugee Agency, as part of a multimedia project designed to reframe the narratives and perception around people forced to flee.
The screening of Portrait of Stranger (18 m.) will be followed by a panel and Q&A with Platon (director), Anadil Hossain (producer/ former Principal Communications Advisor to the High Commissioner, UNHCR) and Andrea Vonkeman (Head of Office UNHCR Nederland). The panel will be moderated by Margje de Koning, artistic director at Movies that Matter.
