War + Love in Kabul
Helga Reidemeister
'War + Love in Kabul' tells the story of an impossible romance in Afghanistan. Hossein and Shaima have loved each other since childhood. As teenagers, they were separated by the war, but they meet again in Kabul in the 1990s. Poverty leads Hossein to the battlefields, too, where he is seriously injured by a shell splinter. Shortly afterwards, Shaima is given in marriage to a man who is forty years older, as his fourth wife. Since her husband has not paid the dowry in full, Shaima, who is pregnant by that time, is taken away by her father. She has to move in with her parents. Despite all these setbacks the two lovers try to see each other as much as possible. They dream of living together one day. Their families – especially the male members – are not very keen on that idea, however, as a relation between a married woman and a paraplegic man would tarnish both families’ reputation.
