With his in-depth video journalism for De Correspondent, Calvin is impossible to ignore. From research to filming and editing, he does everything himself. His podcast Boontjes Doppen, in which he speaks with critical thinkers and outspoken creatives about major social issues, started as a hobby that got out of hand. On Instagram and TikTok, Calvin reaches more than 18.5K followers through his account @cutbeans, drawing them into a greater social awareness. Including people who don’t normally engage with these topics. He has a curious eye for the world around him. And that’s exactly what you’ll see reflected in his film choices.
In the early days of production I was actually interviewed by director Dikla Zeidler. Tremendously curious to see how the documentary has developed over all this time, because it's true: everything really does need to get better. Will this be a film full of hope or cope?
I saw five seconds of the trailer and that was all I needed. Stunning, characterful animation that speaks to the soul, it's about a fish and only fifteen minutes long? Sign me the bloody hell up.
I'm completely unfamiliar with these murders, but the insinuation that they were driven by ethnic fetishes immediately fascinates me. As it happens, this is a conversation I've been having more frequently of late. I personally can't get my head around the idea of having a preference for the ethnicity of someone you date, yet for many people it's the most natural thing in the world. Though a fetish takes it a step further, of course. I'm curious whether this film will teach me more about such preferences and the development of fetishes. On top of that, I've recently started following the work of filmmaker Kiriko Mechanicus for Bureau Buitenland with great interest, so I'm very keen to see what she brings as a documentary maker.
What does it truly mean to be seen? A fascinating setting. I expect this film will resonate deeply with peers who, like so many others, grew up watching porn.
The cinematography looks stunning, but the setting is cold-blooded and bleak. An intimate story about dehumanisation and hope. I need to see how hope can emerge from the hell of a slaughterhouse.
