Voix Invisibles

Bart van den Aardweg

Dutch Focus World premiere

A visual poem by Bart van den Aardweg on alienation, pain, and the search for meaning in the shadows. How does trauma embed itself in silence? How does a person become disconnected from the world outside, and turn to violence as the only way out?

Voix Invisibles is a psychological journey into the minds of angry, disillusioned youth. It is an exploration – through fragmented memories and scenes in cinema verité style – of how radical thought takes root. Inspired by magic-realism, the documentary shows a descent into the lives of lost souls in a nocturnal city, as reality and symbolism merge. Guided by a ghost-like presence, the camera drifts through dark streets, slipping through walls, listening to secret thoughts, rage, sorrow, and confusion.

From one troubled mind to another, the film dives into an internal abyss, where regret, loss, and radicalisation take root. Real lives are shown in candid intimacy, but in parallel a haunting underworld exists. In this purgatorial realm, frozen moments play out like dark fairytales, fragments of memory and myth. The two worlds, the real and the symbolic, intertwine as the film becomes both ghost story and psychological decline.
