Mother City

De Zuid-Afrikaanse organisatie voor woonrechten Reclaim the City komt onvermoeibaar op voor betaalbare huisvesting in het extreem gesegregeerde Kaapstad. Onder leiding van de charismatische Nkosikhona ‘Face’ Swartbooi brengen ze hun geweldloze strijd naar politici, projectontwikkelaars en uiteindelijk de rechtszaal. Een gepassioneerd portret van een pure grassrootsbeweging.

‘We herinneren ze er constant aan dat we er zijn,’ zegt woonrechtenactivist Nkosikhona Swartbooi. Zijn organisatie Reclaim the City ontstond in 2016, toen de overheid een oud schoolgebouw, bestemd voor sociale woningbouw, verkocht aan een particuliere ontwikkelaar. Kaapstad worstelt nog steeds met de ‘ruimtelijke segregatie’ uit het apartheidstijdperk, toen zwarte en bruine mensen uit het stadscentrum werden verdreven naar de randen van de stad. De woningcrisis in Kaapstad is enorm, terwijl veel overheidsgrond op goed gelegen locaties ongebruikt blijft.

Reclaim the City takes the government to court, but that’s not all they do. They occupy buildings where people can live. They educate people about housing rights and the right to protest. Armed with expertise, creativity and joy, they make themselves heard in the city council, at the offices of project developers and even on a gigantic golf course in the middle of the city. The vibrant centerpiece is Nkosikhona Swartbooi, whose determination has a very personal drive. ‘My mother died when I was 7,’ he says. ‘I grew up in a hut with my grandparents, eight people in one room.’ Now he has a daughter of his own, who became his ultimate motivation: ‘I feel an enormous urgency to make the city better for my child.’
